Taynton Bay # 5
When John and William Taynton arrived in 1887 to make a name for themselves, the two brothers probably didn’t imagine how successful they would be. Taynton Creek now the home of Panorama’s Taynton Bowl ski area. The sweep of lake bordered by Kingman Beach is called Taynton Bay.
Jack was a rough-edged stonemason and he was a well-spoken man with a green thumb. The two Welshman settled by the lakeside on land between Dorothy Lake and Kopaki Road. Jack built the Taynton Day Brickyard by the lake, making bricks from local clay for the Valley’s early houses. He helped construct the CPR Lodge with its grand stone fireplace. Bill became the horticulturalist for the irrigated Fruitland Company’s Experimental Farm. His flowerbeds were said to be exceptional, and he owned the Valley’s first glass greenhouse.
Both brothers lived into their 90s, and Bill sang the Welsh lullabies of his youth to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The brothers’ descendants go by different names now, but the heritage lives on in the valleys and bay they loved.
