The Evangelical-Lutheran Martin Luther King Church, named after the famous civil rights activist, is located in the Steilshoop district of Hamburg.
It was built between 1972 and 1974 and was inaugurated at the end of 1974.
Due to the outer facade it is also called "Blue tile" in the People's mouth.
The connection to the church's name is derived as follows: On the "March to Washington" in 1963, during which Martin Luther King gave his most famous speech "I Have a Dream" before the Washington Memorial, Joan Baez sang the song "We Shall overcome " in front of 300,000 people.
During the founding year of the church in 1974 there was still a touch of protest in Steilshoop.
The community garden district was converted into a large new settlement. Here since the war, more than 4,000 people whose homes had been destroyed in the city center had found a new home. The black pirate flags, which were still hanging here and there, told of the resistance of many inhabitants against the establishment of a large settlement in the midst of the green idyll.
