The church was originally planned for a Universalist Meeting House and was completed in 1840. It was built on the stie of the Old Nourse Tavern. The architect was E. Lamb who also designed the Barre Town House. Financial hard times caused the Universalists to sell the church to the Methodist Society in the early 1850's.

As indicated in the church is mentioned as ringing its bell in harmony and together with the Paul Revere bell in the old Unitarian Church and the belfry of St Joseph's across the street.
