An Act to provide for the building of a State Capitol building was signed into law on February 23, 1869. The capitol was designed by Joseph Gosling, as a two-story building in the form of a Grecian Cross. It was built of sandstone obtained from the Nevada State Prison quarry. In 1906, an octagonal Annex was added to the rear (east). Extensions of the northern and southern wings were completed by 1915.
From 1977 to 1981 the building underwent extensive restoration and seismic upgrades. During the restoration an unmarked cornerstone box was found in 1978. Workmen discovered the box in the northeast corner of the building. The box was removed and opened at the Nevada State Museum. On October 31, 1979, the original cornerstone artifacts were placed back in a new cornerstone along with a smaller copper box containing thirty-four more items.
