The USS Constitution is America's oldest commissioned warship. It is a three-masted, wood hulled, frigate. The USS Constitution was one of six original warships authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794. It designed by Joshua Humphreys, named by George Washington, and launched in 1797.
The USS Constitution saw action in the war against the Barbary pirates during the First Barbary War. It later served with extradordinary valor in the War of 1812. She captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five British warships: HMS Guerriere, Java, Pictou, Cyane, and Levant. The battle with Guerriere the USS Constitution earned the nickname "Old Ironsides."
