St Mary’s church, built between 1870 and 1878, is dedicated to the memory of Frederick Vyner, who died in 1870 in an abortive attempt to release him from kidnap in Greece. Frederick Vyner was the sister of Henrietta Robinson, the wife of the 1st Marquess of Ripon, and the owner of Studley Royal. The churches construction was financed by the money that was raised for the ransom of Frederick, as was also a sister church, Christ the Consoler at Newby, the Vyner family home.

The church was designed by William Burges, the architect behind the transformations of Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch. Burges was deeply involved in the Gothic revival in Britain. The building of St Mary’s was attributable to John Thompson of Peterborough. The sculpture in the church is by Thomas Nicholls of Lambeth, the paint decoration was by Fred Weekes and Campbell Smith and Co, and the stained glass was supplied by Saunders & Co.

There are many remarkable features to the interior of St Mary’s. In the nave is the projection of the carved white organ loft and a carved spiral stair case. Opposite the organ is the tomb, with effegies, of the Marquess and his wife. In contrast to the nave, the chancel is richly decorated. The ceiling and dome depict scenes from the Book of Revelations. Extensive use is made of marble and alabaster, including the font.

St Mary’s was used as a parish church until 1969. By 1973 the redundant church was taken into the stewardship of the Department of the Environment, later to become English Heritage. Studley Royal House burnt to the ground in 1946. The surrounding estate was sold to the West Riding County Council in 1966 and was acquired in 1983 by the National Trust.
