Die Schlossanlage stammt zu großen Teilen aus der Renaissance um 1520. Die Gesamtanlage vereint allerdings Bauteile vom 11. bis zum 20. Jh. in sich. Die ältesten Gebäude befinden sich rings um den hinteren Schlosshof. Dazu gehört das etwa 1420 erbaute Kirchenhaus, welches in sich die Dreifaltigkeits-Kirche beherbergt. Den Eingang zur Kirche ziert ein Portal aus Rochlitzer Porphyr, welches im Stile der Spätrenaissance und um 1602 entstanden ist.
Links an das Kirchenhaus anschließend befindet sich das sogenannte Kellerhaus, welches vermutlich auf den Grundmauern des ehemaligen Palas der Burg (aus dem 12. Jahrhundert) steht. Das Gebäude erfuhr während der Ausbauphase um 1519-1525 durch Baumeister Hans Zingkeyssen im Stile der frühen Renaissance große Veränderungen.
Das Fürstenhaus, welches sich rechts an das Kirchenhaus anschließt wurde vermutlich in der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts erbaut und ebenfalls während der Ausbauphase um 1520 im Stile der frühen Renaissance erweitert.
Außerhalb des hinteren Schlosshofes unmittelbar am zweiten Torhaus befindet sich der ebenfalls um 1523/24 auf Resten eines älteren Turmes erbaute Schlossturm. Dieser wurde im Laufe der Zeit unter anderem als Gefängnis, Magazin und Türmerstube genutzt. Die Toranlage mit dem stadtseitigen ersten Torhaus (mit einem einen durchbrochenen Staffelgiebel), dem zweiten Torhaus unterhalb des Schlossturms und dem dazwischen liegenden Zwinger wurde ebenfalls im 16. Jahrhundert erbaut.

The castle complex dates back to the Renaissance about 1520, but the entire complex combines components from the 11th to the 20th century. The oldest buildings are located around the rear courtyard: The church house (built around 1420), which houses the Trinity Church. The entrance to the church is adorned by a portal from Rochlitz Porphyry, which was created about 1602 in the late Renaissance style.
To the left of the church house is the so-called "Kellerhaus", which presumably stands on the foundation walls of the former palace of the castle (from the 12th century). The building got great changes during the extension-phase around 1519-1525 by master builder Hans Zingkeyssen in the style of the early Renaissance.
The royal house, which adjoins the church building to the right, was probably built in the middle of the 15th century and also expanded during the extension-phase about 1520 in the style of the early Renaissance.
Outside the rear courtyard, directly on the second gatehouse, is the castle tower, built about 1523/24 on the remains of an older tower. The tower was used, among other things, as a prison, a magazine and a observation-tower. The gateway with the first gatehouse (with a perforated gable), the second gatehouse below the castle tower and the inner bailey was also built in the 16th century.
