The marker reads:
"Welcome to historic Hukilau Beach
huki - "to pull"
lau - "fish net with ti leaf"
From 1948 to 1971, this site was a popular tourist attraction. Tourists could participate in the hukilau, eat at a luau, buy handmade arts and crafts, and watch the dances of Polynesia. These events led to the creation of the world famous "Hukilau" song.
The Hukilau was conceived as a fundraising venue by local members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), to help build a chapel in the community. This chapel still stands in the community today as a tribute to the past and present residents of Laie.
