The historic 1713 Old State House is the oldest public building in Boston. The Boston landmark structure at Washington and State Streets was built in 1713. It was the seat of the state's legislature until the new State House was opened in 1798. On top of the facade you can still see sculptures of a lion an unicorn, heraldic symbols of the United Kingdom. The building is thought to be designed by Robert Twelves.
The 1713 Old State House is now home to a history museum operated by the Bostonian Society and a National Park Service Visitors Center along the Freedom Trail.
