The Bunker Hill Monument is a 221 foot tall granite obelisk on top of Breed's Hill, the site of the first major battle of the American Revolution. The Battle of Bunker Hill took place on June 17, 1775. It was the first major encounter of the Revolutionary War. Although some of the fighting took place on nearby Bunker Hill, most of the battle took place on nearby Breed's Hill, which is the site of the Bunker Hill Monument and the exhibit building. The obelisk contains 294 steps leading up to the cap of the obelisk from which there is a 360 degree views of the Boston area.
A plaque on the site explains relationship between Bunker Hill and Breed's Hill. It is inscribed:
