The golf course at Stonehaven is situated above the town to the north, overlooking the North Sea.
The first course and clubhouse were opened on April 13th 1888 with ten holes, reduced to nine the following year. The present course and clubhouse were opened on July 7th 1897, the remains of the old clubhouse can be seen on the cliff edge next to the seventh tee.
The course commands a spectacular setting above the sea with the opening hole playing down to the cliff edge. Although not a long course, seven short holes and one par five, the setting can offer many intimidating looking holes, with the short second, sixth and fourteenth holes playing over the edge of the cliffs. A large ravine on the north side, actually the eastern edge of the Highland Boundary Fault, must be crossed on the fifth and seventh holes, these holes now coming earlier in the round after the course was recently realigned.
The course is completely treeless apart from the four holes, 8th to 11th, on the other side of the railway line which are of a gently undulating character compared to the sloping open nature of the seaward holes.
