A pair of old wagon wheels adorning the historic marker describing how Jawhawkers from Kansas burned their wagons, dried some oxen meat and struggled further west on foot in 1849.
The marker and wheels are located on the south side of CA 190 in the village of Stovepipe Wells.
Marker text reads:
Near this monument, the Jayhawker group of Death Valley '49ers, gold seekers from the Middle West who entered Death Valley in 1849 seeking a short route to the mines of central California, burned their wagons, dried the meat of some oxen and, with surviving animals, struggled westward on foot.
