Interesting monument: one panel is missing, which allowed me to photograph the interior of the monument, showing foundry employee's markings for assembly! I doubt any other such photos exist. Wonderful documentation of these extraordinary monuments!

Monumental Bronze Co. model #27. Price (in 1882): $251. This did not include the ornament at the top, which was priced separately. The round tablets at the top could be ordered solid (instead of removable). In this example, one such round tablet has been previously removed. This cemetery was subject to vandalism a few years back, with over 100 stones toppled. It's possible this monument was damaged then as well. To make the best of a bad situation, I respectfully photographed the interior. The markings from the factory are clear: one such marking lists the decedent's name and the number of the tablet for positioning during assembly. The cast iron hardware affixing the finial/ornament at the top is obviously corroded, but very stout with the nut measuring almost 2 inches. As seen, there is no solid base to these monuments, with soil visible at the bottom. Also of note, many of the fasteners for the tablets have been removed. This is of note because they are not typical fasteners (hex or square), but decorative and therefore requiring either a special driver, or brute force of vice grips. There is a bulge at the south side of the base as well, also typical in zinc monuments after over 100 years of weight bearing down on them, and made worse when foundations were insufficient. Next to this monument are three headstones. It is my hope those buried beneath this monument can take solace in the fact that though their monument is missing a piece, it still teaches us more about the ingenuity of these awesome monuments, and further appreciate their beauty. They are: Philip S. VanDenBergh, d.1879; Alida A. Humphrey, d.1882; Cornelius VanDenBergh, d.1876; Helen VanDenBergh, d.1882.
