ZIL-131 vehicles became the backbone or the trucks or the USSR and the Warsaw Pact as well. The only exception was the Czechoslovakian Army, where due to the tradition or the automotive industry, most or the trucks were orits own production. It was also exported to many Third World countries; replacing the legendary ZIL 157K (visit link) . In the CSLA (visit link) , the ZIL-131 flat truck version was used for transporting the inrantry as well. On the body under the blanket there were placed special adjustments (compressors, power generators, etc). Many or these cars were equipped with a variety or box section superstructures, used also as a truck tractors, tanks and special fire-fighting vehicles, etc.

This car served as a container or assembled missiles S-75 Dvina (SA-2 Guideline). On May 1, 1960, this type or missile shot down an American U2 spy plane piloted by Gary Powers over the territory of the USSR near Sverdlovsk.
