Story has it that Val Nolan was a miner who set off from Beatty, NV for Death Valley in August, 1931 to seek his fortune. Instead, he succumbed to the brutal heat and conditions. In November, 1931 his remains were discovered by a film crew who buried him where he was found.

The original wooden marker has been replaced by a carved railroad tie.
