This sturdy pillar is situated on the flat heathery summit of Balduff Hill, 425 metres high, in Perth & Kinross, close to the border with the county of Angus. From Strathmore to the south-east it can be seen as a rounded hill to the western entrance of Glen Isla. The pillar sits on the southern edge of a largely flat summit area. The long distance walking route, the Cateran Trail passes a mile east of the hill.
STEEPNESS: Quite steep on the usual route up from the south-east, but not overly long.
TERRAIN: A faint path heads up through the grassy fields. Then after crossing a fence around a quarter of a mile from the top, the terrain changes to heather which is long in places with little in the way of tracks.
ACCESSIBILITY: The nearest parking is in the hamlet of Kilry or at the Reekie Linn waterfall a couple of miles east. The Cateran Trail can be used to get within a mile south-east of the hill.
NAVIGATION: Not difficult until reaching the summit area where even on a clear day the pillar does not come into view until about thirty yards away. In general it is situated on the south side of the summit area.
DANGER: None except the clumpy heather on the way up.
