"The Historic Carthage Jail and Visitor Center, 310 Buchanan St., was the scene of the deaths of Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church, and his brother Hyrum. Jailed on charges of treason, they were killed by a mob on June 27, 1844. Thirty-minute tours of the jail include a video presentation about Joseph Smith's life. Guided tours are available.
