The sign is made of six blocks of local stone. The largest block has “WELCOME TO DAYTON” on it. The second largest block has a painting of a miner panning for gold and “FIRST GOLD DISCOVERY IN NEVADA, 1849” on it.
In 1849, a pack train of Mormons traveling to California’s goldfields camped near what is today the town of Dayton while waiting for the Sierra snow to melt. Their guide, Abner Blackburn, discovered Nevada’s first gold at the mouth of the canyon. By 1851, hundreds of gold-seekers had swarmed into Gold Canyon, where a tent city grew. The town was formally named Dayton in 1861 and by then had become a commercial hub for miners and served as the first milling center for the Comstock Lode. Today Dayton is has a population of about 9,000.
