Though the building extends the entire length of the block, the post office occupies only the eastern half, with Parks Canada and Service Canada ensconced in the western half. Still, this is a larger post office, offering nearly all services one will find in a large post office. The post office serves a city of about 7,200, lying between the Selkirks to the east and the Monashee Mountains, to the west.
On the banks of the Columbia River, the city's mountain location makes it a skiing mecca, having been referred to as the "Switzerland of America" and the "Canadian Alps". Founded in the 1880s, it has grown primarily as the result of its being a railroad divisional point with large marshalling yards from the time the railroad passed through in 1883, secondarily on lumbering. The Revelstoke Dam, just north of the city, has also become a major employer, as have the tourism and winter sports industries.
