As the plaque reads:
Buffalo Rubbing Stone
Thousands of years ago this rock was carried for many miles and placed here by a glacier.
For hundreds of years it was used by the buffalo as a rubbing stone to remove excess winter hair and relieve the occasional itch the buffalo left parts of the rock highly polished from their action and wore a deep trench around the sides. When settlers first came into the district buffalo hair could still be seen wedged in small cracks in the surface of the stone.
There were many such stones on the prairies. Most have been removed to make way for cultivation many of those which remain in range land areas have been taken over by cattle, who derive as much pleasure and benefit from them as did their predecessors.
