The "new" Massachusetts State Capitol is located on top of Beacon Hill on land that was once owned by John Hancock, Massachusetts' first governor. The State House was designed by the foremost architect of his day, Charles Bullfinch. He was influenced by two London buildings, the Somerset House, by William Chambers and the Pantheon by James Wyatt. The building was completed in 1798.
An annex to the building was designed by Charles Brigham and completed in 1898. Architects Sturgis, Chapman & Andrews designed the east and west wings. They were completed in 1917. The dome is covered in copper and gilded with 23 karat gold.
