A 72' high bronze and granite monument honors the soldiers and sailors from Boston who served the Union during the Civil War. The monument was created by Martin Milmore. The bronze sculpture was cast by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, MA. The monument was installed on September 7, 1877.
The monument has a bronze allegorical sculpture on top of the granite column that represents the Genius of America. The four granite figures about halfway up the monument represent the four sections of the country: North, South, East, and West. The bronze bas-relief plaques on the sides of the base depict the departure and return of the forces, the Navy, and the work of the Boston Sanitary Commission.
The dado on the front of the monument is inscribed:
TO THE MEN OF BOSTON
WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY
ON LAND AND SEA IN THE WAR
WHICH KEPT THE UNION WHOLE
DESTROYED SLAVERY
AND MAINTAINED THE CONSTITUTION
THE GRATEFUL CITY
HAS BUILT THE MONUMENT
THAT THEIR EXAMPLE MAY SPEAK
TO COMING GENERATIONS
