Alfons Maria Petzold, Pseudonym De Profundis, (* 24. September 1882 in Fünfhaus; † 25.

Alfons Maria Petzold, pseudonym De Profundis, (* 24 September 1882 in Fünfhaus [part of Vienna's 15th district], † 25 January 1923 in Kitzbühel) was an Austrian writer.
Alfons Petzold was the son of a worker who had moved from Saxony to Austria because of his social-democratic attitude. In 1908 Petzold was diagnosed with a tuberculosis disease. With the support of his friends, he was repeatedly able to go to a sanatorium in Brunn am Gebirge, near Vienna. For the literary career of Petzold, the meeting with the Social Democrat Josef Luitpold Stern, who encouraged the publication of Petzold's first book of poems in 1910, became decisive.
After 1913, the novel "Erde" ("Earth"), in which Petzold processes his hospital stays, followed the first poems. His most successful book, a stylized portrayal of his childhood and youth, appeared in 1920 entitled "Das rauhe Leben" ("The Rough Life"). In his lifetime, Petzold was regarded as a working-class poet by his work, in which he uniquely combined social themes and religious perspectives right up to mysticism and pantheism.
