[EN] Despite its name its base is rectangular. Fulques Nerra, Count of Anjou, undertook construction in the 11th century. A blind tower, it served as a watchtower. From the top of the tower develops a circular view over the whole region. In fine weather you can see the Moncontour Tower of the same type and the fortified church of Saint-Join-de-Marnes. The defensive system also included a later circular keep, which formed part of the whole. From this last one survives only the trace of the foundations to the ground. The whole was integrated into a larger building called royal palace which constituted a real fortress which was dismantled under Louis XIII seems at the request of Richelieu. The town then included a large number of Protestants, probably from Richelieu's will to dismantle the fortress to better fight the Protestants.
