The Order of United Machinist and Mechanical Engineers was formed by Thomas Talbott and 18 other in May, 1888. They formed the union that would evolve into the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) to resist wage cuts and to provide insurance against unemployment, illness, and accidents.

From a small start, the IAM grew. In the 1950s the union grew to over 900,000 members as the aircraft industry grew and aerospace workers are added to the ranks of the IAW. In 1964 “and Aerospace Workers” is added to the union's name to reflect the change in its membership.

Some highlights of the IAM’s history:

1888: 19 machinists meeting in a locomotive pit at Atlanta, GA, vote to form a trade union. Machinists earn 20 to 25 cents an hour for 10-hour day.
1911: Women admitted to membership with equal rights.
1920: Machinists earn 72 to 90 cents an hour for 44-hour week.
1950: IAM joins International Transport Workers Federation. Machinists now average $1.82 an hour.
2009: The IAM launches second social media project just over 2.5 years after launching the IAM’s YouTube Channel official Twitter account – just 5 months after launching its Facebook page.
2013: Membership is at 570,423
