Battery 234 was originally built as a World War II concrete coastal gun battery for two 6" rapid fire guns mounted on M4 carriages placed on either side of an earth covered reinforced concrete support structure. The guns were provided with 6"-thick cast steel shields. The battery received its barbette carriages and shields in 1946. The 6" guns were never received. The guns displayed today were placed there in 1976 through the cooperation of the Smithsonian Institution.
