Angel Mounds is a former American Indian settlement in southwest Indiana. The natives were from the Mississippian Indian tribe. It is located just to the west of Newburgh, IN between it and Evansville, IN off of Pollack Ave.
The natives that lived in this location took residence here near the year 1000. They stayed until around 1450, and for the next couple hundred years, the land changed hands between various Native American tribes before finally being taken over by European settlers. One such settler was the family of Mathias Angel, which latter became the namesake to the area, Angel Mounds.
There are a number of mounds still in existence at the location. Most are inside the "museum" area and beyond. One very nice mound still stands across Pollack Ave from the park entrance.
