High on Dartmoor there are large areas of peat bog (Blanket bog) some of which were impassable until peat passes were cut. These were cut to enable travelers to traverse the high moorland in relative safety.

The whole area is covered in peat gullies, tussocks, hidden holes and because the area is "blanket bog" walking across it very dangerous. it is not uncommon for the less knowing walker to sink into the mire...
