[EN] The theater, also known as La Comédie, was of great cultural importance to the inhabitants of Saint-Pierre.
Inaugurated in 1786, this building built in the image of the Bordeaux theater could accommodate up to 800 spectators on three levels.
The immense scene was planned for performances of great shows. Many famous actors were performing there. Theatrical troops came from France for the season.
This is where the great closing ball of the carnival took place. It was also a place for debates and exchanges and political gatherings.
In 1902, the theater was closed for one year, bankrupt because of the loans made for its renovation.
Long before the Abolition of slavery, the Theater of Saint-Pierre was open to everyone, black and white mixed.
The director of the theater wished that the seats should be the same for everyone. The authorities were very annoyed, but they did not want to say no.
They had given him their consent, threatening to close the theater at the first incident. There was never a single incident.

La scène immense était prévue pour des représentations de grands spectacles. De nombreux comédiens célèbres s'y produisaient. Des troupes théâtrales venaient de France pour la saison.
C'est là que se déroulait le grand bal de clôture du carnaval. Il était aussi un lieu de débats et d'échanges et de rassemblements politiques.
En 1902, le théâtre était fermé depuis un an, en faillite à cause des emprunts effectués pour sa rénovation.
Bien avant l'Abolition de l'esclavage, le Théâtre de Saint-Pierre était ouvert à tout le monde, Noirs et Blancs mêlés.
Le Directeur du théâtre avait souhaité que les places soient les mêmes pour tout le monde. Les Autorités étaient très embêtées, mais n'avaient pas voulu lui dire non.
Elles lui avait donc donné leur accord, en le menaçant de fermer le théâtre au premier incident. Il n'y eut jamais le moindre incident.
