This pillar is situated on the 190 metre Lucklaw Hill in north-east Fife, only a few miles from the North Sea coast,

The hill is barely a mile north-west of the village of Balmullo and just over two miles west of the town of Leuchars.

Man's handiwork is prominent on the hill with a communications ariel on the summit area, and a quarry which is gradually eating away the south side of the hill.

Being the last significant height around 200 metres before the coast is reached the view from the pillar is excellent in all directions. North, over the River Tay to the city of Dundee, which is only six miles away. East, over the Eden Estuary and out to sea. South, over the low hills of Fife to the hills beyond Edinburgh, and west, towards the distant mountains of the Scottish Highlands. The pillar shows signs of wear, but is in reasonable condition.

STEEPNESS: Quite steep in all directions, but nothing too strenuous. The south-west approach is the gentlest gradient.

TERRAIN: Mostly paths through grassy fields. The summit area is of heather and scrub. The northern part of the hill is wooded.

ACCESSIBILITY: Only a mile or so from Balmullo, where paths lead up the hill. The best approach is from the south-west from Cuplahills, where a well constructed path leads through Willie's Wood, past Lucklaw Farm and leads to a path to the summit.

NAVIGATION: No problems, but in the thickest of clouds, the pillar is east of the ariel, and a couple of yards from a cairn that marks the actual summit.

DANGER: Only the quarry edge to the south of the summit area, but this is fenced off.
