"Their objective: to establish, in the English Garden, an observatory sheltering a Foucault telescope.
Martins strongly opposes it, alleging reasons of edaphic nature (low point, sandy soil, high water table), meteorological (frequent mists, brutal floods) and landscaped (wooded screen, obstacle of the Towers of the Pines and
Cathedral). The dispute goes back to the supervisory authorities, which ultimately decide in favor of the scientists: the Observatory will be built at the planned site between the Grand Basin and the new greenhouse ...
The author questions the architectural competence of astronomers and describes the circular construction surmounted by his white cupola as an "Algerian marabout": an impertinent sobriquet, which she will preserve until today! ..
As for the astronomical observatory, the object of controversy, it will only work for a few years. Abandoned by the astro-physicists themselves, his telescope will be deposited in the museum of the Faculty of Sciences. However, in the 1980s,
Will find a renewal of activity with the installation of a planetarium, before being definitively abandoned."
