Joseph was an Austrian immigrant who apparently worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway. His headstone indicates that he was "
Killed by Engine 3878" at Redgrave. Redgrave is simply a railway siding west of Donald. Prior to 1897 (when the divisional point was moved to Revelstoke) Donald was a large divisional point on the railway, with Redgrave Siding about 10 kilometres to the west of it. Both are about 35 highway kilometres north of the town of Golden, where Joseph is buried.
It's apparent that
Engine 3878 was a CPR locomotive and that some sort of mishap involving the engine lead to Joseph's demise. We have found no information on any train wrecks or incidents in the Donald area in 1913. Nor have we found anything whatever on Engine 3878 itself, so we can only surmise that:
A: Joseph was in the employ of Canadian Pacific at the time of his death.
B: He met with some sort of accident involving Engine 3878 while at work.
