Statement of Significance
Flinders Street Station is one of Melbourne's most important buildings. Its extensive scale, overall unity, interesting forms and gross exaggerated expression are unique in Australia. It is an essential part of the city scape and socially important as a traditional meeting place. The station has been the focal point of the City's rail system since 1854 and the circulation patterns and forms that evolved from that date are reflected in the present building. It marks a high point in the evolution of the Railways.
Description
Flinders Street Station comprises a vast complex of station facilities, offices, platforms and landscaped areas. Its design was the result of a competition held in 1899 and won by Fawcett and Ashworth of the Railways Department. The scheme provided for a giant roof over the platforms. Work commenced in 1900 by P Rodger but was later taken over by the Railways. The main structure was completed in 1909, the verandahs and booking office in 1910.
Condition and Integrity
The buildings are structurally sound and basically intact, however the stained facade hinders any real appreciation of its visual quality. The pediments on the Flinders Street facade, coloured glass in entrance arches and the delicate ridge capping of the Swanston Street verandah have been removed.
Location
207 Flinders Street, corner St Kilda Road, Melbourne.
