The North Carolina Underwater Archeological Unit, in conjunction with Dennison Breece of Southport, recovered this six-pound naval cannon in the Cape Fear River just off Brunswick in May 1985. Research determined that it fits the date of origin and size of those found on the Fortuna, the Spanish vessel sunk at Brunswick during the attack of September 4, 1748. Preservation of the tube was completed in 1988 when it was placed on display with a reproduction naval carriage.
