The Revelstoke Bridge is one of several crossings of the Columbia River by the Trans-Canada Highway on its way through the British Columbia interior. Completed in 1961 and officially opened on July 28 of that year, the bridge is 310-meters (1,016 feet) in length. It is accompanied by a Canadian Pacific Railroad bridge, immediately to the southeast, and the old six span single lane truss bridge, opened in 1924, to the southeast of the railway bridge.

Though it's not officially their bridge, the city of Revelstoke looks upon the bridge as their own. One example of this attitude was a proposal in March of 2016 to install decorative lighting on the bridge to enhance its visual appeal, the cost to be borne by the city. A short news article in the Revelstoke Mountaineer, reprinted below, looked into the story.

The City of Revelstoke's Enhancement Committee wants to add lights to the Trans-Canada bridge to give visitors a sparkling first impression of Revelstoke

By Emily Kemp - Mar 18, 2016
City of Revelstoke staff are exploring options to light up Revelstoke’s Trans-Canada bridge in order to help improve the city’s curb appeal to highway motorists.

A few years ago the city requested permission from the B.C. transportation ministry for a similar idea, but it was turned down. Now the city’s enhancement committee is hoping to give it another go.

“Things may have changed with [transportation ministry] personnel, maybe highways will be more supportive,” director of community economic development Alan Mason said.

The committee, which is charge of improving the appeal of Revelstoke to benefit the local economy, has also put forward a smaller concept of placing lights in the trees at the western entrance of Revelstoke.

“It would be pretty neat to have the town lit up,” Mason said. “It would stand out in people’s memories.”

The initiatives would improve Revelstoke’s appeal to motorists, but installation and ongoing maintenance will be a significant cost that city staff have yet to explore fully. First, city councillors will review these ideas at the city council meeting on Tues. Mar 22 and vote whether to explore the idea further.

[The article requested comments at the end, most of which were, for various reasons, negative. Incidentally, a May 2016 News Article gave the project a "thumbs down", citing a $250,000 price tag just to study the idea, let alone the cost of installing and maintaining the lights.]
