Both the Tahlequah City Hall and the Cherokee County Courthouse are located in this very large T-shaped building. The City Hall faces west on South Cherokee Avenue.

This is a three-story building with narrow one-over-one windows, set in doubles. The building has a veneer of pebble-embedded masonry panels. The main entrance is an aluminum and glass double door with wide sidelights, and a set of fixed panes on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The entrance is covered by a masonry and wood flat canopy.

Tahlequah has a population of 16,500 and is the county seat for Cherokee County. The town is the oldest municipality in Oklahoma, based on its incorporation under the Cherokee National Council in 1843, decades before Oklahoma statehood.

This is a Mayor/City Council form of government. The City Council is comprised of the Mayor, elected at large, and four Councilors who are elected from the individuals wards. The Street Commissioner, City Clerk, and Chief of Police are also elected, as well as the City Treasurer. Other officials are appointed and approved by the Mayor and Council.

The City of Tahlequah presently has a total work force of one hundred and eighty-eight positions which include nine elected officials, one hundred thirty full time positions, twenty-nine part time positions and twenty volunteer firefighters.
