In 2015 the province of Manitoba created a protected area for white pelicans downstream of the fish ladder at the St. Andrews Lock and Dam. The area is popular with both recreational fishermen and bird watchers, but many pelicans were being injured and killed by discarded fishing line. Fishing is now prohibited during the summer season in the pelicans' favourite fishing location. In season, pelicans may be easily viewed from either bank of the river and from the roadway over top of the dam. The coordinates given are for the end of the fence marking the protected area, providing the closest unobstructed view of the pelicans' fishing grounds.
