In 1589, Duke William V ordered the construction of his own Brauhauses, the Hofbräuhaus. From its inception the Hofbräuhaus was owned by the Bavarian rulers, first dukes, later electors. From 1806 it was royal court brewery until king Maximilian II handed it over to the Bavarian state in 1852; Today's official name is Staatliche Hofbräuhaus am Platzl.
The large beer hall is the most famous part of the Hofbräuhaus and offers wood tables for about 1,000 people. For regular guests, there are shelves where they can include their beer jugs. It plays live the in-house music band.
In the upper floors there is a festive hall with a nine-meter-high vault for about 1,500 people, as well as other rooms for a total of more than 1,000 people (the "Kammersaal", the Munich room, the Erkerzimmer, Bräustüberl, the former "Trinkstube"). The courtyard with the Löwenbrunnen serves as a beer garden during the summer.
In 2004, a replica of the Hofbräuhaus was built under license in Las Vegas in the United States.
