I recovered the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey triangulation station from 1948 in good condition. The station is located west of Highway 139. An orange, metal witness post aid in station recovery. Reference marks 1 and 2 were located but not the Azimuth Mark (which I believe to be either destroyed or buried under rock and dirt due to a highway expansion project in 1990). This station mark is also located on a topography map as 'MEARS'.

The posted NGS coordinates and datasheet description are acceptable for station recovery, although the community of Tionesta no longer exists and the telephone line is also gone.

NGS datasheet info for station mark:

01/01/1948 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1948 (WRH) THE STATION IS ALONG THE HIGHWAY FROM CANBY TO TULELAKE, ABOUT 29 MILES, AIRLINE, SOUTHEAST OF THE TOWN OF TULELAKE, 8 MILES EAST SOUTHEAST OF TIONESTA, 20 MILES NORTHWEST OF CANBY, ON THE FIRST KNOLL SOUTH OF THE OREGON-CALIFORNIA STATE LINE QUARANTINE STATION. THE STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK AS DESCRIBED IN NOTE 1A AND 7A, PROJECTING 2 INCHES AND STAMPED MEARS 1948. IT IS 138 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE TELEPHONE LINE AND 75 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE CENTERLINE OF STATE HIGHWAY 139.

TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE TOWN OF CANBY, GO WEST ON U.S. HIGHWAY 299 FOR 0.6 MILE TO JUNCTION. TURN RIGHT ON STATE HIGHWAY 139 AND GO 22.0 MILES TO THE STATION ON THE LEFT.
