MW0835 - USC&GS 'OVERPASS' Triangulation Station - Modoc County, CA - U.S. Benchmarks on Waymarking.com

I recovered the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey triangulation station from 1948 in good condition. The station is located west of Highway 139 and on top of a small hill and just south of an overpass bridge. An orange carsonite witness post and a white reflector witness post aid in station recovery. Reference marks 1 and 2 were located although RM 1 were recovered in addition to he Azimuth Mark. This station mark is also located on a topography map as 'OVERPASS'.

The posted NGS coordinates and datasheet description are acceptable for station recovery, although the community of Tionesta no longer exists and the blazed fence line post is gone.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1948 (WRH) THE STATION IS LOCATED ALONG STATE HIGHWAY 139, ABOUT 20 MILES, AIRLINE, 21.5 MILES BY ROAD SOUTH SOUTHEAST OF THE TOWN OF TULELAKE, 5-1/2 MILES NORTHEAST OF THE LOGGING TOWN OF TIONESTA, ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY ABOUT 150 FEET SOUTH FROM THE SOUTH END OF THE HIGHWAY OVERPASS ON THE GREAT NORTHERN RAILROAD. THE STATION MARK, STAMPED OVERPASS 1948, IS A STANDARD DISK CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK THAT PROJECTS 6 INCHES. IT IS 59.7 FEET WEST OF THE CENTER OF STATE HIGHWAY 139, 9.5 FEET SOUTHWEST OF A TRIANGULAR BLAZED FENCE POLE AND 7.5 FEET WEST OF THE FENCELINE.

THE STATION IS REACHED AS FOLLOWS--FROM THE TRAFFIC CAUTION LIGHT ON STATE HIGHWAY 139 AT THE TOWN OF TULELAKE, GO SOUTH SOUTHEAST ON STATE HIGHWAY 139 FOR 21.5 MILES TO THE SOUTH END OF THE HIGHWAY OVERPASS AND THE STATION ON THE RIGHT.
