MW0846 - USC&GS 'SCORPION' Triangulation Station - Modoc County, CA - U.S. Benchmarks on Waymarking.com

I recovered the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey triangulation station from 1948 in good condition. The station is located east of Highway 139 and on top of a small hill. A nearby metal witness post aids in station recovery. Reference marks 1 and 2 were located although RM 1 was found uprooted and the disk was bent up on one side. The Azimuth Mark was destroyed as part of a highway expansion project in 1990. This station mark is also located on a topography map as 'SCORPION'.

The posted NGS coordinates and datasheet description are acceptable for station recovery, although the community of Tionesta no longer exists.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1948 (WRH) THE STATION IS LOCATED ALONG THE EAST SIDE OF STATE HIGHWAY NUMBER 139. IT IS ABOUT 15 MILES AIRLINE SOUTH SOUTHEAST OF TULE LAKE, ABOUT 10 MILES AIRLINE NORTH NORTHEAST OF TIONESTA, ABOUT 1.3 MILES NORTH OF THE ROAD INTERSECTION AND SIGN SCORPION POINT AND 72 FEET NORTH NORTHEAST OF A LARGE JUNIPER TREE WITH A TRIANGULAR BLAZE. THE STATION IS A STANDARD STATION DISK THAT IS SET IN THE TOP OF A CONCRETE POST. IT IS 58 FEET EAST OF THE CENTERLINE OF HIGHWAY 139 AND 5 FEET NORTHEAST OF A WHITE WITNESS POST. THE DISK IS STAMPED SCORPION 1948. IT PROJECTS 3 INCHES ABOVE THE GROUND.

TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE INTERSECTION OF MAIN STREET AND STATE HIGHWAY 139 IN THE EAST EDGE OF THE TOWN OF TULE LAKE GO, SOUTHEAST, ON THE HIGHWAY FOR 15.1 MILES TO THE STATION ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD AS DESCRIBED.
