Circuses and Sideshows Website

Since May 19, 1883, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody had operated his "Buffalo Bill's Wild west show, however the show went bankrupt in July 1913. After the bankruptcy Tammen hired Cody to perform in his show and renamed the circus the "Sells Floto and Buffalo Bill Circus" for the seasons of 1914 and 1915.

The painted circular lists Buffalo Bill so the show depicted in the mural must be from 1914-1915 time period.

Starting from the left is the flyer for the show. The next section shows Buffalo Bill and possibly Annie Oakley, a buffalo and an Indian with a chief's eagle feather headdress. Next it shows people walking around. Three elephants and a team of white horses is next. Beside the white horses is a lion accompanied by a turbaned handler dressed from Arabian Nights. Behind him some dogs are performing tricks while some acrobats are practicing in the background. Next are three zebras wearing halters with feathers. Across the background are colorful flags with the sword swallowers, the fat lady, etc. depicted. After the zebras come a couple of performing bears dressed in costumes. In the background a bear is balancing on a ball. Next comes the three tigers, one balancing on a ball while their trainer looks on.

Next are two men and a women in tights - possible the high wire act? Not sure about the boy in the striped outfit. A seal with a ball on his nose ends that section. A door breaks the picture and the next section is a clown with two hippos. There are tents and three elephants in the background as well as a giraffe. A window breaks up the picture and the next section shows people gathered around a table covered with food. More people are turned with their backs to us looking at the elephants and workers unloading the train.
