This pillar is situated on top of the 455 metre Craigowl Hill, the highest point of the Sidlaw Hills, a low range that run from Perth in the west all the way north of Dundee before fizzling out towards the Angus coast. The hill is prominent from all directions for miles around and is noted for the cluster of telecommunications masts that sit on the summit and surround the pillar. The pillar itself is in reasonable condition but has a few chips in it and suffers from flaking white paint. The view, as expected, is excellent if ignoring the surrounding metalwork.

STEEPNESS: As expected from being the highest hill in the range, it is a stiff climb, but not overly long.

TERRAIN: Plentiful paths lead to the summit, with a tarmac road for the telecommunications engineers leading up from the south-east all the way to the summit.

ACCESSIBILITY: The quicker ways to the summit are all from the south, just over a mile if walking up the road, but the best way is from Balkello Woods, two miles to the south-west where there is a car park and a well constructed path that heads up the hill, taking around an hour to reach the top.

NAVIGATION: Not much difficulty with all the pathways. The pillar is in between the two fenced off areas of masts and ariels.

DANGER: None if keeping to paths.

Type of Trigpoint: Triangulation Pillar

Condition: Slightly Damaged

Number on Flush Bracket: S1609
