The Robertson Basalt is a distinct bio-geographic province. It has scientific and educational value. The Nature Reserve was established in 1884 & is a small area of subtropical warm temperate rainforest which once covered 2500 hectares of the Robertson plateau. The dominant trees are sassafras and coachwood. Although the area is small (5 hectare) the vegetation is in remarkably good condition. A number of birds occur including the satin bower bird, whipbird, wonga pigeon and yellow breasted robin.

There is a 600 metre loop walk through the reserve which is suitable for wheelchairs. Interpretative signs explain the species of trees, bird life & the uses Aborigines & early European settlers made of certain plants.
