Barren Grounds Nature Reserve has diverse flora and fauna communities and habitats. These are of scientific and educational value both to the general public and schools, colleges and universities. Two rare species of bird, the ground parrot and the eastern bristle bird, are associated with the heath ecosystem. Many plant communities are evident including sclerophyll woodland, dry & wet sclerophyll, swamp & dry heath and rainforest.
I walked to the Stone Bridge featured in one of the Australian Heritage Database photographs. There was less water today but this enabled a better appreciation of the affects of erosion which created the natural stone bridge.
It is a one kilometre drive from the Nature Reserve entrance to the picnic area & carpark where the walks commence.
