BELOVED WIFE OF JOHN MARONEY
SCOTLAND 1838 JANET McARTHUR 1922
In order to still mark a burial from nearly one hundred years ago, this hand-painted wooden cross must be receiving some tender loving care. Sadly, this memorial was not photographed as part of a 2011 project at
St James Cemetery. Similarly, this memorial was not recorded in Bruce S Elliott's visit and transcription from 1977.
Strangely, Janet was not buried in Notre-Dame Cemetery with her husband and their children. Janet McArthur and John Maroney had at least five children: Thomas, Margaret (husband Thomas West), Mary Jane, Helen Theresa (husband Archie Latimer) and John Hugh (1882-1944). Even though census material shows that Scottish born Janet was Catholic, she was buried in this Anglican cemetery.
Janet's Irish born husband John Maroney was buried in the Notre-Dame Catholic Cemetery, 7 August 1924. Janet and John were together for sixty years but were buried miles apart.
