The building was constructed in the Federation Free Classical style in 1903 originally it was the Australian Union Steamship Navigation Company Building , but the name changed to P & O when the company was taken over in 1914. In the middle of the upper facade are the initials A.U.S.N.C. entwined on a shield, below which is the name "P & O BUILDING" in block lettering.
The bottom part of the walls are granite above which is local limestone blocks.
