[EN] In the center of the gardens which face the main façade of the old courthouse (now a cultural center) stands this monument sculpted by Marquet de Vasselot in memory of Victor Schoelcher.
Sculpted in stone and placed on a pedestal, inaugurated in 1904, it represents the abolitionist accompanied by a child, a young slave on the road to freedom. On the base are engraved these words:
No French land can carry more slaves.
Victor Schoelcher, the principal responsible for the abolition of slavery in the Caribbean, and also fighting the cause of which culture is within the reach of all.
Victor Schoelcher is a French politician who was born in Paris on July 22, 1804 and died in Houilles on December 25, 1893. He is known to have acted in favor of the definitive abolition of slavery in France, through the abolition decree , Signed by the Provisional Government of the Second Republic on 27 April 1848.
