This is lock 60 on the Erewash canal, known as Trent lock. It is the first lock on the canal right at the junction with the River Trent. The numbering is an extension from the numbering of the Grand Union Soar Navigations, the last lock on which, is lock 59.
The Erewash canal is a broadbeam canal that extends northwards for 12 miles from the River Trent to Langley Mill through 15 locks.
Amazingly it only took a year to build and was opened in 1779 at a cost of £23,000. It was built to transport coal from the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire coalfields down to the East Midlands. The canal was very successful but as with most other canals fell slowly into disuse after the introduction of the railways. It was restored and finally reopened in February 1983.
In 1929 the canal became part of the great Grand Union canal hence the lock numbering.

Connected Points: The Erewash canal starts at the southern end at its junction with the River Trent. It finishes at Langley Mill where it joins the now disused Cromford canal. On its way it had a junction with the also disused Derby canal at Sandiacre.
