Located at the Museum of Flight are a large number of static aircraft on display. One of them is a Lockheed SR-71A Nose Section. A nearby placard highlights this aircraft cockpit and it reads:
See the Cockpit of the World's Fastest Jet The fast and famous SR-71 Blackbird was derived from the Lockheed A-11 interceptor aircraft first flown in 1962. The SR-71 Blackbird,
the two-seat strategic reconnaissance version, first flew on December 22, 1964. Cruising at over three times the speed of sound,
the SR-71 can photograph enemy territory and leave interceptor aircraft far behind. Today, the remarkable SR-71 still holds the absolute speed record set in 1976!
The Museum's Blackbird nose section comes from an SR-71 that suffered a spectacular crash in 1968. A landing gear failure on take-off caused the plane to slide 1,000 feet (300 m) off the runway at Beale Air Force Base. The crew escaped unharmed,
but the Blackbird 64-17977 was ready for the scrapyard.
The nose section was acquired from the Air Force and restored at the Museum's Paine Field facility.
